Open Records Information

It is the policy of the City of El Dorado that all public records that are made, maintained or kept by or are in the possession of the city, its officers and employees, shall be open for public inspection as provided by, and subject to the restrictions imposed by, the Kansas Open Records Act (PDF) .

Any person, upon written request, shall have access to such open public records for the purpose of inspecting, abstracting or copying such records while they are in the possession, custody and control of the city clerk or her designated representative. Standard copies are available for $0.50 each; substandard reproductions are available for the actual cost of reproducing. To request an open record, please use our records request form .

Administration

The Administration Department is comprised of the City Manager's Office, Finance, Utility Billing, and Human Resources.

Fire Department

Overview

The El Dorado Fire Department is responsible for the protection of the City of El Dorado, and contracts with the El Dorado Township, and the Western portion of Prospect Township. Through these contracts the Fire Department is able to generate revenue worth over half of its annual operating expenses. It also contracts to provide Hazardous Materials response to all of Butler County. The Department takes pride in serving its jurisdiction, and providing the Citizens of El Dorado with an outstanding service at a lower expense that would normally be found in a City of comparable size.

The El Dorado Fire Department provides a wide range of services which include:

  • A comprehensive fire inspection program of all commercial businesses that insures our community is a safe place to work, shop and live in
  • Community events (Health fairs, festivals, Safe Night Out, parades, etc.)
  • County-wide hazardous material response
  • Fire education and prevention programs
  • Fire origin and cause investigations
  • Fire suppression activities
  • Free blood pressure checks (At the Fire Department)
  • Medical emergencies response

Hazardous Materials

Most of the full-time staff are certified to Hazardous Materials Technician Level, and many of our volunteers have obtained a certification of Hazardous Materials Operations Level. The El Dorado Fire department is responsible for responding to a wide range of hazardous materials calls, responding not only to emergencies within the City of El Dorado, but also within Butler County, Kansas.

Medical Emergencies

All full-time personnel, as well as many of our volunteers, are state certified Emergency Medical Technicians. In an effort to provide the best possible service to the citizens of El Dorado, we respond in cooperation with Butler County EMS to a wide variety of medical emergencies.

The El Dorado Fire Department continues to look to the future to see what challenges lay ahead. With a focus on strategic planning, on-going training, and providing professional emergency services to the citizens of El Dorado, this department stands ready to meet the needs of its community.

Police Department

Responsibilities

The El Dorado Police Department is responsible for enforcing City of El Dorado ordinances as well as traffic and drug laws within our boundaries. These cases are handled through the Municipal Court . Felony charges are handled through the Butler County District Courts.

Our force has an authorized strength of 31 positions (28 sworn). We embrace the problem-oriented approach to community policing, to work with our citizens to maintain the status of being one of the safest cities in Kansas.

The department motto, "Community Safety, Partners in Service", states the essential purpose of the El Dorado Police Department. The department protects the rights of all persons within its jurisdiction to be free from criminal attack, to be secure in their possessions, and to live in peace.

The department serves the people of El Dorado by performing law enforcement services with high standards and skill. It is to the people that the department is ultimately responsible.

Chief's Corner

El Dorado Kansas is a city of the second class with a population of about 13,000. It is located in South Central Kansas at the juncture of several state and federal highways, including I-35. Our resources are agriculture and oil production. We have a growing industrial park, which is supported by an excellent lake.
